When you’re cycling – indoors or outdoors – your feet press on the bike pedals.

Load Tolerance describes how much force your knee joint can handle without producing:
- Pain
- Swelling
- Stiffness
- Lingering soreness
Most upright activities — including cycling — places force on your knees.
The key question is not whether biking is good or bad.
The key question is whether the force matches your knee’s current capacity.
The Four Ways Force Affects Your Knees
There are only four possible outcomes when force is applied to your knee:
1. Too little force → knees weaken.
(Extended rest, inactivity)
2. Too much force → knees flare and more symptoms occur.
(High resistance, long duration, increased frequency)
3. Adequate force → knees maintain strength.
4. Gradually increasing force → knees get stronger.
Cycling itself is not the problem.
Unstructured progression is.

Find a duration, resistance, and cadence that feel neutral.

- No increased stiffness or swelling after
This might be:
- 10 minutes
- Low resistance
- Steady cadence
That is not a failure.
It is your starting point.
Step 2 – Establish a Baseline
Cycle three times per week on non-consecutive days.
Use a duration and resistance that is consistent with your cycling tolerance (determined in Step 1).
Continue this for two weeks.
If symptoms appear:
- Soothe your knees.
- Decrease one variable, like the duration.
- Repeat the two week program.
This is where most people ignore symptoms and skip ahead.
But finding your symptom-free baseline is the foundation for future success.
Step 3 – Progress One Variable at a Time
When you're able to complete the two weeks without any aggravation in knee symptoms, choose to either increase your cycling duration by 10–20%.
Or increase your cycling resistance slightly.
Not both.
Then, repeat the two week program.
The 36-Hour Rule
If knee symptoms:
- do not occur → continue progressing.
- resolve within 36 hours → hold steady.
- persist longer than 36 hours → reduce progression.
This is how knees build strength safely.
How Long Should Knee Soreness Last After Cycling?
Mild soreness that resolves within 24–36 hours can be acceptable during strengthening.
Symptoms that last longer than 36 hours suggest the load was too aggressive.
Persistent swelling or stiffness indicates your knee needs reduced intensity — not complete avoidance.
