Lindsey Vonn is one of the greatest Alpine ski racers of all time.
She retired in 2019, underwent a partial right knee replacement in 2024, and returned to World Cup competition in late 2025.
On January 30, 2026, she tore her left ACL (the Anterior Cruciate Ligament in her left knee).
Days later, right before her 5th Olympic competition,she made her position clear at a press conference:
“I’m gonna do it. End of story.”
She intended to compete.

Can you ski without an ACL?
Let’s break this down.

Can You Ski Without an ACL?
Yes — it is possible to ski without an ACL.
But whether it’s wise depends on:
- Strength
- Swelling response
- Proprioception
- Speed demands
- Your long-term goals
Skiing without an ACL is not automatically reckless.
But it is not automatically safe either.
Why Skiing Without an ACL Is Possible
1️⃣ Skiing Is Not a Pivot-Heavy Sport
Unlike football or basketball, downhill skiing does not require repeated pivoting on a planted foot.
Because of that, some athletes can compensate for a torn ACL by building sufficient muscular strength and neuromuscular control.
The quadriceps, hamstrings, and hip muscles can provide dynamic stability that partially substitutes for the ligament’s mechanical role.
2️⃣ Surgery Isn’t Always Required for Long-Term Quality of Life
A 2024 longitudinal study found no significant long-term difference in quality of life between individuals who had ACL reconstruction and those who did not. (source)
This surprises many people.
It suggests that ACL surgery is not automatically necessary for function, depending on the person and the demands placed on the knee.
3️⃣ Elite Recovery Is Different
That said, elite athletes operate under very different conditions than recreational skiers.
Immediately after an ACL tear, pain and swelling occur.
Swelling alone can inhibit muscle activation — a phenomenon called arthrogenic inhibition. (source)
When this happens:
- Quadriceps strength drops
- Stability decreases
- Reaction time slows
Elite athletes often have:
- Immediate medical monitoring
- Daily rehabilitation access
- Strength coaches
- Movement analysis
- Recovery resources
Most recreational athletes do not.

Why Skiing without an ACL is Risky
Even if pain subsides and strength improves, an ACL rupture affects something more subtle — and potentially more important.
Proprioception
The ACL doesn’t just provide mechanical stability.
It also contributes to proprioception (source) — your body’s ability to sense joint position and movement.
When proprioception is impaired:
- Muscles activate slightly later
- Micro-adjustments are less precise
- Asymmetries develop unconsciously
On flat, predictable ground, this may not matter much.
At 60–80 miles per hour, it absolutely does.
Downhill skiing demands rapid reflexive adjustments.
Small timing delays can have large consequences.
Did the ACL Tear Contribute to the Crash?
During her 2026 Olympic race, she crashed within the first 13 seconds, sustaining a complex tibia fracture.
We cannot know definitively whether the ACL tear contributed.
But biomechanically, here’s what matters:
Just seconds before losing control, she landed a jump with her right ski contacting the snow slightly before the left.
Ideally, both skis should land simultaneously.
Subtle asymmetries like this can indicate protective loading.
Even when someone feels confident, the nervous system may still reflexively offload the injured side.
A few inches off an ideal path at high speed can change outcomes dramatically.
Again — we cannot say the ACL caused the crash.
But we can say that altered proprioception and protective movement patterns increase variability under extreme demands.
How I Evaluate Someone Who Wants to Ski After an ACL Tear
When someone asks me whether they can ski without ACL surgery, I do not start with fear.
I start with assessment.
I evaluate:
- Strength symmetry
- Swelling response after training
- Single-leg landing mechanics
- Proprioceptive control
- Fatigue resistance
- Confidence under speed
Because skiing isn’t just about whether you can move.
It’s about whether you can react quickly and efficiently when something unexpected happens.
Making Decisions After an ACL Tear
Here’s the part that matters most.
The “right” decision after an ACL tear is not purely medical.
It’s values-based.
For an Olympian, the possibility of another medal may outweigh the risk of future surgery.
For most of my clients, the goals sound more like this:
“I want to lift weights, run, ski, and still be walking confidently at 100.”
The same injury can justify very different decisions depending on what success means to you.
The question is not:
“Can I do this?”
The deeper question is:
“Does this risk align with the life I want long-term?”
